2026 Guide: Vietnam Visa Requirements for Malaysian Passport Holders

Do Malaysian Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam?

No, for short stays. As of 2026, Malaysian citizens are granted a 30-day visa exemption. You can enter Vietnam for tourism or business purposes without a visa, provided your stay does not exceed 30 days, including the dates of entry and exit.

If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for an e-visa before your arrival.

Does Any Exemption Apply?

- The 30-day unilateral visa waiver is the main exemption. It is valid for both short-term tourism and business trips.
- The 5-year visa exemption is available to overseas Vietnamese in Malaysia and their immediate family members.

How to Apply for a Visa?

For stays of more than 30 days, Malaysian passport holders must apply for a 90-day e-visa through the official portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. The online process requires a passport data-page scan and a recent portrait photo.

How Much Does It Cost?

Please refer to the table below for Vietnam visa fees for Malaysian citizens:

Visa Type Visa Fee (USD)
30-Day Visa Exemption Free
E-visa - Single Entry (up to 90 days) US$25 (~98 MYR)
E-visa - Multiple Entry (up to 90 days) US$50 (~196 MYR)

Can I Get a Visa on Arrival at the Airport, or Do I Need to Apply in Advance?

Malaysian citizens can receive their 30-day visa exemption stamp directly at the airport free of charge. However, if you need a visa for up to 90 days, you must apply for an e-visa in advance. You cannot upgrade from a 30-day visa-free entry stamp to a 90-day visa at the airport.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Vietnam Visa?

The 30-day visa exemption is granted immediately at immigration. If you apply for a 90-day e-visa, the normal processing time is 3 to 5 working days.

Please note that the Malaysia is about 1.0 hours ahead of Vietnam. Be sure to check the time difference carefully to choose the correct application time.

How to Get an Emergency Visa for Malaysian Passports?

If you are a Malaysian citizen and realize at the last minute that your stay will exceed 30 days, you may apply for an expedited e-visa through a visa agency, which may be processed in as little as 1 to 2 hours.

Do Malaysian Citizens Need a Transit Visa?

Generally, no. For a simple transit, you remain in the transit area. For self-transfer situations, where you need to exit and re-check your baggage, Malaysian citizens can usually use their 30-day visa-free entry to clear immigration at no cost.
